87 iroc cant find temperature switch

Hi,
I have an 87 z28 iroc camaro and the temperature gauge recently became pinned in the highest temp. position. I think the temperature switch or temperature sending unit is the problem. Could you tell me where this is located on my car it has 305 t.p.i. with an automatic. My chiltons manual says it is located on the thermostate elbow but not on my car. Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks g.

Re: 87 iroc cant find temperature switch

Try drvr side cylinder head between #1 & #3 cylinder exhaust ports.

If you measure the resistance of the sending unit with the engine cold, center lead of sending unit to ground, it will read a high resistance, ie, 5K or more. As it warms up, it will read less than 200 ohms.

You also might try banging the dash with your fist to "unstick" the needle. With key off, the needle may go back to cold. With sending unit unplgged, and key to on, needle should go to cold. Hit dash at black square!
