Which fuse do I use?

I just bought my 1st Camaro. 69 RS/SS and on the second day of ownership I blew a fuse. It is the top left fuse in the box. It controls the dome light, cigarette lighter too and maybe some other things that I don't know about. I purchased 10, 15 and 20 amp fuses from Radio Shack, but I am not sure which one to use or if I need something else. The fuse I removed blew when I pushed in the cigarette lighter. Any suggestions?

That circuit runs the cig lighter, dome light, glove box light and console light, and you can tap off it on the 'bat' terminal of the fusebox. I'd use at least a 20 amp fuse.

Re: Which fuse do I use?

Check to see the reason why the fuse is blowing. The fuse is there as a protection for the circuit when it gets overloaded. You might look over the wiring to your cigarette lighter, since the fuse blew when you pushed the lighter in. Always replace the fuse with an equal amperage fuse or one that is rated less than the one you pulled out. The fuse ratings are on the fuse box as well.

Re: Which fuse do I use?

As suggested, use a 20 amp fuse. The cig lighter element may be an aftermarket one with a lower resistance value, meaning it would draw more current than designed.

The other question is, is there an aftermarket radio in the car and does it get its power from this circuit? If radio was playing at time the cig lighter was selected, this event could also have overloaded the circuit.

Re: Which fuse do I use?

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try the 20 amp fuse first. By the way, the car does not have a radio. There is just a blank plate there. I hear that is more desireable. I also prefer the fact that the car does not have an antenna interfering with the nice lines of the body.

Best Regards,

Taras
