HEI Coil Replacement

My in-cap coil on my GM HEI distributor needs to be replaced, as the (+) lead melted and shorted out against metal of the coil. I orginally thought there was a problem with my MSD (6al) box because I wasn't getting a spark, however, this seems like a much more likely culprit. Should I replace this coil with an OEM coil or an aftermarket coil? Is an external coil the way to go instead---and if so how would it be installed. My gut feeling is to get another in-cap coil. Thanks all....

Re: HEI Coil Replacement

IMO, if you have an MSD box, install an MSD coil.

Re: HEI Coil Replacement

Ok, for the price I ordered the internal type MSD coil. Hopefully this solves my problem. Thanks again.

Re: HEI Coil Replacement

If you can, try to get an external coil. These are usually oil filled and are able to maintain a much cooler temperature. HEI coils get way, way too hot; and I would think it would be worse with an MSD box.

Re: HEI Coil Replacement

I'm with Silver - oil fillled is the way to go. In fact, when mounting an oil filled coil you should mount it according to the directions which is usually in the vertical direction. I have a www.davessmallbodyhei.com HEI distributor in mine that uses an accell super coil at Dave's recomendation.

Re: HEI Coil Replacement

My new MSD coil is installed with no problems. I still have no spark. The troubleshooting tests yield no results. My heavy black lead (ground) for the MSD box is getting a constant 12 volts....does this sound normal??? I think the box got fried when the coil shorted out. What do you guys think?? Thanks

Re: HEI Coil Replacement

The box may have gotten fried. Bypass it and see if the engine starts up.

Re: HEI Coil Replacement

Thanks I'll give that a try tonight. I wasnt sure if that was ok to do because the 4 pin module was removed when the 6AL was installed. Thanks again.
