battery gauge

My 68 batt gauge barely moves up or down, but it does move slightly. I'm just wondering how much it should be moving or is this normal. Please let me know what your gauges read.

Re: battery gauge

The gauge should stay around the center mark, with a low battery it will move to the charge side till the battery charges, with the car off, turn on the highbeams, it should move to the discharge side. If its ever on the discharge side with the car running, you are just running off the battery.

Re: battery gauge

If in doubt the gauge is working correctly, check your Alternator's output with a volt meter at the battery. Start the car and check the output, it should be around 13.5 to 14.5 volts. Then look at what your battery gauge is reading and see if it is close to what the volt meter reading was. It should be reading to the right of the center line if you have the factory gauge.
