Post Dome light replacement?

How much trouble is it to change out the dome light housing and wiring? Do I have to take out the headliner to run the wires? Mine is currently not working.

Re: Dome light replacement?

To change the housing its quite easy, no need to remove the headliner. The wire is another story. Using a coat hanger you could feed the new wire from the driver side edge but you will still need to pull away the headliner slightly on the driver side edge to access the existing wiring.

Re: Dome light replacement?

First of all, you should find out what the problem is. There are several things that could be wrong. Start with the bulb, which would be the easiest. After check the wiring and the connectors that go to the door jam switches and make sure they are working. Also make sure that the connector is connected on the tail light harness on the driver's side, which you could access from the trunk. I doubt if your wiring is bad. I take it you have a 68 or 69 Camaro? If you do need to replace the wiring, you will have to remove parts of the headliner because the wiring has several clips that clip to the body and it is impossible to fish the wire through the openings in the roof.

Re: Dome light replacement?

He could leave the existing wiring in place and fish the new wire using a coat hanger, the wire will just have to rest on the headliner though. Usually you can open up just 12-15" of headliner near the driver door and it will allow you to replace the wire, reclip or zip tie in place, without much fuss. Good point on checking the door switches though, might be the problem.

Re: Dome light replacement?

Usually the door jamb switch is at fault. For some reason, mine is still working after all these years.

Re: Dome light replacement?

Had to replace housing b/c I used the 212 bulb and it melted the new OER housing and wiring.... Fishing the wiring thru the back roof dog leg and down into the trunk was another issue. Dont use the 212 bulb anymore,,, use the 211,,, same bulb but less candlepower... Door jabs work off ground and need a good bite somewhere.
