You will need a volt meter. They are inexpensive and are a must for troubleshooting. They are simple to use. With the car not running the battery volts should be about 12.3-13 for a fully charged battery. With the car running the battery volts should be 13.6 to 14.2 volts if the alternator is charging properly. Sounds like your voltage may be higher. Try a new voltage regulator if your voltage is higher than 14.2. Sounds like the voltage regulator is not properly working to me. I am sure other with more experience will chime in. My suggestion may get you started.

Replace the voltage regulator. The alternator is obviously over charging the battery. Grab a volt meter and check the alternator's output.

If you used a retro batt. that has holes in the vented caps and slightly overfilled it, when charging it will allow liquid to collect on the batt. top.
It will also corode the snots out of everything around the batt.
Could just be overfilled?
