Alternator Running Hot

I have just started checking out my 68 Camaro in which I have installed a new 350 with a single wire chrome alternator. I used the old wiring harness and have made connections that I saw on a previous thread.I have grounded the alternator to the block. All the wires seem to be just warm to the touch but the alternator after only 10 minutes is so hot it will burn to the touch, The volt meter shows its putting out about 16 to 18 volts.I checked the battery it reads right at 12 volts. Why is my alternator running so hot? Is this to high of a voltage? If so can I adjust voltage regulation its an internal voltage regulator. I would appreciate any help you can give me because I'm ready to cruise.

Re: Alternator Running Hot

16-18 volts is way to high, the alternator is outputting max, the reason why it is hot. Are you sure its a 1 wire alternator? Do you have wires going to the 2 small terminals? If its a externally regulated alternator and power is applied to the field, the alternator will output max.
