light problem

When headlighs/park lights ar off blinkers work, but when I turn on the headlights the right turn signal arrow lights up and stays on, and I can't activate the right turn signal, but I can activate the left. The indicator light stays on when the dash lights come on, but is not affected by the dimmer switch. How can I figure this out?

Re: light problem

Kurt, what happens when you just turn the parking lights on, but not the headlights? Is the light switch properly grounded with that plate with the pigtail wire attached to metal dash support?

Re: light problem

Check ground screw that is located right in the middle of the speedo, tach housing if its a 67-68. if its not in there or properly grounded, youll get all sorts of gremilins.. I spent about 4 days tracking down that mess only to find that it was a tiny little screw that I had left out when I took my cluster out.

Re: light problem

your right side tail light housing is not grounding to the body. Scrape off some paint under a couple of the mounting bolts or use some hardware stor star washers.

Re: light problem

Guys, its a 69 with plastic housings and the whole rear harness grounds to the trunk latch support. If 1 rear light works, the whole harness should be grounded. Good suggestions though.

Re: light problem

Have you replaced the front turn signal light assy lately. I got some bad ones from OER and they did some crazy stuff. Will they work with just the running lights on, headlights off? Is the car an RS by any chance?

Re: light problem

Turned out to be a bad right front parklamp assembly. and the single ground wire that attaches to the bar near the radio and were the flasher is mounted. Now all that is left is the get the interior lights to work.

Kurt - can you explain a little more how you fixed this problem? I've got the exact same symptoms with the addition of the left rear brake light also lights up when the headlights are on. What exactly was wrong with your front parking light?

Re: light problem

The problem he had is VERY typical of a bad ground at one of the corner lights....

With the parking lights off, the blinker circuit grounds thru the headlight switch amd it works.

With the blinker off, the parking light grounds through the turn signal vircuit and it works.

With both on, you have 12v on both sides, and it doesn't light at all. Sometimes you might notice the turn signal flashing out of sync.

To troubleshoot this, turn on the parking lights, and look VERY closely at all the bulbs. There should be only ONE filament of the 2 filament bulb lit. The one that is lighting both filaments (dimly) is the one with the bad ground.

Re: light problem

I finally figured it out today. My RH frt parking light housing was not grounding to the valence because of paint and I had a faulty tail light socket that had a broken ground. Scraped a little paint and replaced the socket and shizaam. Now I only got one electrical gremlin left................my wiper motor is still not working. It's always something.

Re: light problem

what about on the RS. I noticed that the parking lamp assembly is different. It doesn't have the ground wire going to the body like a standard would. I assume that it's done through the harness as it plugs into the front engine harness. My right front is out and I have the blinker issue as well. My instrument lights don't light up either.

The wiper motor should be grounded to the firewall. One of the three rubber mounting bushings should have a small copper strap that shunts the motor frame to the firewall. I've seen many new rubber mounts come without the ground strap so it's easy to miss. As a test, try grounding the motor to a ground of some sort. You could do this with a piece of wire from the motor to the alternator frame for example. If it suddenly works, you've found the problem.
