Charging System Problem

I have a 68 with a 396. My gen light came on. I took the alternator to the local part store. It checked out good, I also had the regulator checked. It's also good. With a meter the battery is checking 12.45 volts across the terminal. The battery post on the alternator is checking about the same. Shouldn't the hot post be showing about 14 - 15 volts on the alternator?
Anybody have any advise?

Re: Charging System Problem

Your charging system has crapped out, and the gen light is letting you know, just as it should. Sometimes these testers are not as accurate as we would like.

I would start by checking / cleaning the terminal connections on the voltage regulator.

From there, look in electrical basics at the top of the electrical forum, open the external reg alternator page, and run thru the voltage checks to narrow down the problem.
