Temp Idiot Light Test????

Is there any kind of ez test I can do to see if my temp idiot light is working? Is it supposed to come on for a second when I first turn the key to start my car? Do you think I could hold a cigarette light under the connection that goes to the manifold? Apparently boiling water wouldn't be hot enough to trigger the idiot light on my dash. Is there a way to test it with a test light? Thanks

Re: Temp Idiot Light Test????

The light will light to test it when the car is CRANKING, and go out when you release the key to run. This happens by a bypass wire, green to the ignition switch, which is grounded in start. It tests the lamp, but not the wiring to the engine or the sending unit.

To test the rest of the wiring, it is perfectly safe to remove the wire to the sending unit, and short it to any available ground, the alternator case is a good spot. If the key is on, the light should light.
