What do you guys think of the MSD 6AL?

Worth the money?

What are the main advantages?

Cool Re: Msd 6al

Yes in my opinion it is worth the money or I wouldn't have bought one (was so impressed I bought a 7AL-3 also). Advantages are easier starting, smother idle, better part throttle response due to the multiple ignition sparks up to about 3500 RPM, and consistent high RPM ignition. Also get piece of mind of a soft rev limiter.

Re: Msd 6al

Question for LargerDave:
Have you every used a dial-back timing light with any success with MSD 6A??
Some Team Camaro members say they have had no problem while others say dial-backs don't work with MSD 6A. What is your experience???

Re: Msd 6al

I have the MSD6al and like it. I just wished that the digital6 would have came out sooner.... lots of goodies with that one. Any way the 6al helped me a lot, just be sure you have good plug wires.

Re: Msd 6al

I do have good wires.
I replaced my Accel dual point with a MSD distributor and bought wires to go with it.
I run a Mallory coil and I want to go ALL MSD.

Does the 6AL take the place of the coil?
Also, on the Summit websight, I looked at the installation instructions for the 6AL.
It shows 2 cables that run from the 6AL to the battery terminals.
Are those the heavy battery cables?
My battery is in the trunk. Am I going to have to run these cables all the way from the engine compartment to the trunk?

Re: Msd 6al

The MSD takes the place of your points. You still need a good coil, and if your Mallory coil is still working keep it.

Re: Msd 6al

The wires that you see on the 6AL are the #10 wires for power to the 6AL. Yes I would run them back to the battery. I tried grounding the black wire close to the 6AL and powering the box from another source and ended up frying the box. MSD recommends hooking the power wire directly to the battery and since I rewired mine I havent had any problems. I also added one of there capictors to the power wires.

Re: Msd 6al

So these wires are 10 guage?

Do they come with the 6AL long enough to go from engine compartment to trunk? Or should I stop by the hardware store for some wire?

Re: Msd 6al

My Craftsman dial back light works fine with the 6AL. I imagine it will depend somewhat on the light. Some lights are pretty cheaply made and the trigger circuit in them may not like the multiple spark discharge signal.

Re: Msd 6al

I run a Mallory Hyfire 6AL in my Camaro. It's digital, no need for RPM "pills" to change, just turn a dial to change rev limit.

Re: Msd 6al

I love the Mallory 6AL also. No pills to change, just the twist of the screwdriver and your rev limiter is set.

Re: Msd 6al

The #10 wires on the 6AL are only about 2` long. You will need to add wire to it to go to the trunk.

Re: Msd 6al

OK, here is a question.

I have had repeated trouble when I have shops work on this car.
I had a body shop paint it once and they did a crappy job but the worst thing is that they ran my car. They roasted the tires off and ran it completely out of fuel.
I was furious. I was gonna whip all their @sses at once.
Another place I took it to was just going to look it over real good to give me an accurate estimate on body work and a decent paint job. So I left it there for 2 hours so they could look it over and I ran some errands.
There is NO reason for them to drive it. NONE.
When I was coming back, I seen the jerk pass me coming the other way. Him and another guy are having fun driving my ride.
Needless to say, I was pretty hot.
So I'd like to be able to bring this thing to shops or possible park it somewhere to go in and get a burger and somehow disable it so it can't be started in a hurry.
I was hoping the MSD 6al would allow me to set an RPM limit that only I would be able to change.
I thought it had modules for that.
If not, I'd like to just be able to disable the car from being started. That was one of the reasons I was thinking on getting one.
Am I going down the wrong path?
