switching to one wire.

what all do i need to do?
can i take the voltage regulator off?
i put in a one wire 100 amp and all i did was just re attatch the red "hot" wire.
could this be one of the reasons my car will not start?
it would suprise me cause i have been running it for about 2 months and it did just fine.
