Brake lights

I have a problem with a 68 camaro with a painless wiring harness. I used to have brake lights and turn signals. Today, the turn signals work and the tail lights work, but no brake lights. I checked the fuses and the switch and both are good. Any ideas?

Re: Brake lights

Brake light sw at the pedal. Make sure the plunger is not sticking.

Oh sorry, I see you checked the bad. How did you check? Ohm it out?

Re: Brake lights

Sounds like you have a bad ground in the stoplight circuit. Check & clean your sockets & grounds at the tail light housings. On our cars the sockets are what GM used to ground the circuit.

I just picked my car up from paint. Everything worked prior to taking it there. They painted the truck with grey/black spatter paint & I had no tail & brake lights when I picked it up. I also lost my instrument lights as well. I cleaned the sockets & the housings & it all works fine now.

BTW: I added a ground harness to both tail light housings.

Good luck

Cool Re: Brake lights

I am having they same problem regarding every function works except brake lights. I installed all new harnesses also c/w fresh paint.I pull all bulbs and clean contacts, circle washers around tailight lugs and brakes work fine again then I head out for a drive in the 68 and test before I leave all is good. Then I figure its time to do another brake light test an hour or so later, now they are dead again. I realize its a bad ground in the loop but damn those are the toughest to isolate, nice to have a hobby,eh!!!

Re: Brake lights

After many hours of frustration and head scratching, I have found the source of my problem regarding no brake lights. It seems to be in the brand new IDIDIT tilt steering column I had installed during my re-build. I get a ground when I tilt the steering wheel to bottom position but lose my continuity when the wheel is in middle positions leaving me with no brake lights. I am not sure if steering wheel wiring is causing this inside column and if I can repair it or some paint is on column near contacts. I have had enough for today, I think IDIDIT manufacturing might be the next e-mail.

Re: Brake lights

I found my problem after a week of searching. The brake light issue was the worst kind. Intermittent. The wire coming off the brake light switch was pinched at some point in its life and broke the wire inside the insulation. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes it didn't. Finally got it to not work long enough to trace the problem. I think I am good with all my wiring issues this week.
