I was always told and have had the understanding that that soleniod was an anti-dieseling soleniod. When voltage was applied to it (key on) this soleniod magnatized the coil and made the plunger retract. When voltage was removed (key off) the plunger returned to its correct position which in turned opened the throttle a little and made the carb shoot a small amount off fuel into the engine, which would prevent the engine from!!!! Dieseling, running backwards and all those funny sounds it would do.
