Unhappy checking plugwires with ohmmeter!

checking plugwires with ohmmeter

Have tip in stumble problem with 327 5 speed nova and after playing with carb and fuel thinking of putting in plugs and checking 7 year old 8.5 super conducter MSD plug wires with ohm meter! Have a new voltmeter with ohm scale on it and was told i should be able to check plugwires with the ohm meter on it! Only problem i am not sure how to use it and what to look for on readings!!! Any experience or lessons are greatly appreciated as always. thanks much! AL

Re: checking plugwires with ohmmeter!

Not sure of what kind of meter you have, hopefully a digital one. Put one lead in in where you see a V and upside down U. Other lead in common. Set your meter to read ohms (upside down U) set to 200K. Meter should show a 1. Put one lead in one end of wire and the other lead in the other end. Do not have your hands on the tips of the leads when measuring because you will be reading your body resistance too. I just read a new 8mm MSD suppression wire and it read 2.3K. I'm not sure what a 8.5 super conductor will read. Main thing is that all the wires are close in readings. A longer wire might read slighly higher than a short one because of the added lenght. If your wires read closer to 0, go to the lowest scale on your meter, usually 200. Same thing, make sure they are all close in readings.

Wink Re: checking plugwires with ohmmeter!

Yes it is digital. MSD website says 40-50 ohms per foot on these wires! thanks again, AL
