Alternator warm with key out

I have a new internally regulated alternator that I wired up for my 68 coupe using the plug-in adaptor (that goes in the stock connection for the voltage regulator). Problem is, when key is out and nothing is on, the alternator is warm. I assume this isn't correct and I will probably end up with a dead battery....or something worse. All other electrical is working fine. I did a search and found some related posts but nothing on point...except for one posting that said get a new alternator. If, hypothetically, I assume that the alternator is okay, does anyone know if there might be something related to the wiring that I might check out? There are the 3 wires to the alternator........blue/white and red. Seems hard to mess that up, but you never know!

Re: Alternator warm with key out

Get a voltmeter or test light and with the blue and white wires disconnected from the alternator and the key off check for voltage on these two wires. One should have battery voltage with the key off. Looking at the front of the alternator place the wire with voltage on the left terminal and the other wire on the right. If it still gets warm, unplug the adapter at the regulator harness. If it stays cool something's wrong with the adapter. If it still gets warm then someting's wrong with the alternator.

Re: Alternator warm with key out

I recintly went thru this with my 100 amp, 1 (advertised 1 or 3) wire int. reg. alt. upgrade.
Finally called the manufacturer and found out that besides the red wire, only the blue one should be hooked up to get the charging light to work. Of corse, the old external regulator needs to be disconnected and the blue wire jumped to brown for light to work. They advertised it a 1 or 3 wire, but only works with 2! The white wire terminal was a "dummy" as they proclaimed, but was causing a big draw on my batt.

Thanks, I will give it a try. Could be possible that I have the white and blue wires switched. I can also try eliminating the white wire all together. We'll see.... BTW Mark, great pics!
