wipers won't go off

I have the wiper switch out on my 68 and by out I mean out on the work bench. But when I turn the ignition to the on position the wipers turn on!. I bought this car from someone who started the restoration and quit about 3/4 of the way done, and NONE of the wiring is color coded to the wiring chart. So please don't suggest following or check any specific color wire, because there ain't none! So what would make the wipers run without the switch in the car? Anyone got any solution short of buying a new harness and rewiring the car?

Re: wipers won't go off

You probably have two wires reversed on the motor. The link below should help you.

Re: wipers won't go off

The wipers get power, theoretical only when the ignition is on, from the yellow wire, all the time. It's turned on when the switch grounds one of the blue wires.

When you turn the switch off, The motor keeps turning until the wipers are parked, at that point, a park switch internal to the wiper motor opens and it stops.

No idea why they on, but if you disconnect the plug with the yellow wire, they will stop. In case it ain't yellow no mo, it's the top one in the group of three on the wiper motor.

The washer pump will. Do you hear a clicking sound as the wipers are wiping? If the washer pump is engaged, the wipers will wipe regardless of switch position, or even without a switch. The washer pump has to stop in the home position before the wipers will stop wiping. Your problem is probably the little gear on the washer pump is stuck and not stopping in the home position.

Re: wipers won't go off

You need the drag of the wipers to make it actually stop. Otherwise it will overrun the park switch and just keep turning.
