140 amp alt ?

My alt does not start charging until I rev the engine up at least to 3500 rpm. If I just crank it up and let it idle it won't be charging. Once it starts charging, it will stay charging even at idle. But that's after I rev it up. Is there anything wrong with it?

Re: 140 amp alt ?

Is it a 1-wire setup?

Re: 140 amp alt ?

No it replaced the original one. It has one big 12v wire in back and the two prong plug on top.

Re: 140 amp alt ?

What's probably happening is that the alternator has to reach a certain speed to use the residual magnetism to bootstrap itself, and once it has the field powered, it will continue to produce power as long as you don't stop it.

Does your 'gen' light come on when you turn on the key? On the stock setup, the current through the 'gen' light is used to flash the field and start the alternator at a lower rpm. Once the field is powered the light has 12v on either side of it and it goes out.

Re: 140 amp alt ?

Mine does the same thing. No gen light as it is a console car. Had to get it to 4k to excite the field. Found out the little brown/white 24 gauge resistance wire had burnt up at some time (ignition sw to VR). When I got car it had a 1 wire on it. I converted back to stock and ran into this. Check the electrical sticky for wire diagrams.

Re: 140 amp alt ?

you mean any car that has a console has NO idiot light?
that is kind of a stupid design.
my 74 Monte has a stock ammeter (which doesn't work), but it also has a "gen" light.

you don't plan sincerity.
you have to make it up on the spot.

wanna hear about 20 years ago when i was too smart to know any better?

I just did some work on a 69 SS/RS console car and it had a 'gen' light...

Re: 140 amp alt ?

Gen light is not hooked up if it is an original console car on a 69. The little plastic lens is there but no electrical connection behind it. Have no idea about a 74 Monte, but I believe speedfreek is talking about a 69 rs/ss.
Here is an earlier posting about this problem and gen light, Jim also confirms no light on console cars. See post #11

i guess by 74 they figured out that even in cars with gauges, an idiot light is a good idea..

Re: 140 amp alt ?

All firstgens, including gauge cars, have a length of resister wire in the dash harness wired in parallel with the gen light, to light off the alternator even if the gen light is burned out, or in the case of a gauge car, there is no gen light. You might check that wire, bet you have the same problem madmax did.
