Site Policy On Political Ads in Open Forum???

Just curious about it since we have an Off Topic forum for things like politics. I saw a political ad in a thread in the Bench Racing Forum and thought it was odd that the ad would be there. My guess is that the ad is something that Autoforums is aware of???? Just curious and not trying to .

Kind Regards,
David F.

Re: Site Policy On Political Ads in Open Forum???

Thanks for the heads up David. The forum rule covers posting political, religious etc. topics. The advertising folks are subjected to in the forums from banner ads is something that brings in revenue for the site owners, for the click system to work the banner ads are displayed here but are hosted on the advertisers site. In the case of google ads the site has banners to google who then has third party ads pass through their servers and display here. My understand is content can be controled to some degree but all the other end has to do is replace a file on their end to change the content.

I will forward your report but often it is like trying to find a needle in a hay stack as there are thousands of possible advertisers to search for.

On a side note Autoforums hits the "guest" viewer with the most ads, reduces the ads a bit for logged in users and reduces them even more for paid members.

Re: Site Policy On Political Ads in Open Forum???

Also besides just dumping random ads on pages, Google-analytics and Google Ad Services are intuitive snoops such as the tools used by Facebook which are always reading the pages you are on. Haven't you ever noticed if you post an entry on your wall on Facebook about green widgets, that in a matter of minutes all the ads you see are about green widgets.

So in theory if you are on a thread here that has a series of political key words that Google thinks relate to someone maybe a candidate or a party who or that is paying Google to place ads on pages, you will start seeing those related ads on your pages as you surf.

Another reason why I use the no scripts add in with FireFox to strip what few ads a paying member gets here, and more important to block the scripts that Google uses so they can't track my surfing habits. If you are a Google member you can turn off the tracking in your security settings but you never know if they are honoring those preferences. Big Brother is always watching
