Al may have a better answer but I believe it's because it helps keep the site optimized for dial-up users. It also can cut into bandwith usage a little...

We do not have them enabled as they can so easily get out of control. Huge images shoved into small boxes if they are off-linked really slow up the forums for anyone on slower connections. One guy linked to images on our server for his avatar on another site and sucked out over 6000 calls for the image in a couple of weeks. It all adds up.

The local ones on the server are fun for awhile but get tiring fast for regular visitors especially if they are animated. you may notice that there is not much for flashing on this entire site, except for the little flags which show 'new' posts. I've tried to keep blinking banners off the side of the pages etc.

hope this explains the current reasoning. Not to say it isn't subject to change in the future.

At one time I know Dennis had a mop/broom avatar indicating he was the "janitor".

I asked what happended to it, now I guess I have my answer.
