First Name

More then a year ago I received a email asking that I put a first name on my personal profile. Even though my user name is my first name and I try to sign each post with my first name I was glad to add the name to the profile. I, like most all other members have nothing to hid about the first name thing but I notice there are some that do. It seems the members with the oddest user names haven't got their first name on their post. It would be great if everyone was held to the same standards so we could know who we are communicating with.

Re: First Name

While not a requirement, and even IF it was, no way of telling if someone was telling the truth about who they are.

Is Doug your first name?

Why was it so big of a thing a year ago and now it's not if not required?

Makes no difference if they tell the truth or not, at least you can address them by a name.

Re: First Name

You can easily address them by USER name just the same.

Re: First Name

The add your first name thing started way back when the site first got started. It was never intended to be mandatory or for anyone that has a screen name that identifies them or if their name was in their signature. The only thing it was for to make it easier to communicate with each other, especially when some screen names are like "onemorecamaroforsomeonethatbleedschevyorange"

That is what I though Dennis until the puch last year. I had never received a email from the admin until the name request. Apperantly most everyone else got the same email and had no problem with the request.

It looks like most of us have first names in our profile and it does make the site a little more friendly. Why not make it a requirement for the same reason we both cited?

Re: First Name

Imho we donít need to make it a requirement. Some people prefer not to list their names. We are trying to keep the site user friendly to attract more members and adding additional requirement may be counterproductive to that goal.

Re: First Name

I kind of agree with John... When the site first got started the only rules were keep it civil and treat each other with respect, we all come here for the same reasons... That was short lived as the site grew but we tried to keep the rules few and common sense.

Roger said he got email from an Admin so that means it was from the paid staff of those running the site and probably a generic message sent out to all the forum sites owned by AutoForums.com

They would be the ones to contact; IMO it would be impossible to enforce and would require special coding forcing the name field be populated when logging in or signing up. Even them a lot of folks would not put their real names and would possibly protest with insulting or suggestive names.

Roger Is your concern here in the open forum because of something going on in the Off Topic forum. I did notice you are having a debate over someone not providing a first name back there...

Re: First Name

Some like the anonymity to keep their private live private, some to pot stir (few there are), and some due to their wealth or being famous ?

It is way too easy to make a spoof name and/or email anyway IMHO.

Re: First Name

I just went back a year in the welcome wagon section and check some 200 new members and all but 1 has a first name on their post. There were about a half dozen that were listed as Guest that didn't even have a profile. So there is really no concern about new members.

The worry that a name may not be real means very little because I believe there just needs to be a handle to address a poster. I can understand the reluctance to give a location or a email address but a generic first name is real paranoia.

So Doug, can you tell us why you decided not to enclude your first name?

I "included" my real name as my screen name.

Douglas IS my first name (Doug for short, and not in trouble ), G. is the first letter of my last name.... and I THOUGHT it would be "silly" to put it in again. So I just put in _____ to stop getting the pop-up. Just that simple.
