User List Search option

Hey Al,
Just a suggestion but is there any way to add a search option to the user list? With this many members the list is getting L-O-N-G! I know there's the alphabetic list option, but some of the letters have over 30 pages. If possible maybe add search option where you could type the first part of the name. Maybe it's just me but it would help if I'm trying to PM someone or referring another member to PM someone else. Just a suggestion.

Re: User List Search option

Harley - have you tried just typing in the user name as a regular search? I did it with my name, and a host of threads came up where I was active - you could try that and then scroll through the thread till you get the person your looking for.
Just an idea.

Re: User List Search option

There is a Search Members function. It's in the same place as all the search links are.... upper right corner of the page in the wide red border, just above the Occupation heading. It even allows for advanced searches.
Works great.

I typed in Harley and got 22 hits. You're right there in the middle.

Re: User List Search option

I did try it with the regular search option and it came back
Quote:
Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.
The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search : Al
I tried again with my name and only got 1 thread hit. So I went to advanced search and searched for posts by user name and was able to a better response. I just thought it would be a nice convenience to be able to type in for example "Hwy" and go right threw the user list to all members that start with "Hwy" rather than searching through several threads. It was just an ides.

Re: User List Search option

I'm confused Harley (which isn't tough to do really).
Are you looking for a way to just search for members, or look for their threads? By 'threads', did you mean 'pages' of the user list?

The search term you used is too short, like it says. Two letter terms are too short for the search engine to efficiently compile the results you're looking for. Sometimes even a three letter search term is too short.
I typed in 'hwy' and got one short list on one page that had only 4 results. I don't know how much more specific the search could have been. Some members names are all very commonly spelled, so you're going to get a boat load of responses to a search on them. I was surprized to only get 22 hits from the member list when I searched on "Harley'. I would have thought there would have been tons!

Try to use as many charactors as possible when doing a search. The more letters/numbers you use in the search box, the better chances that you'll get what you're looking for.

Re: User List Search option

Hi.
Have you tried the Advanced Search that is available for the names?

https://www.camaros.net/forums/memberlist.php?do=search

(that might open up the advanced one, if not let me know)

This allows you to narrow down the list quite a bit.

Re: User List Search option

that did in fact bring up an advanced member search, looks like exactly what harley was looking for. It took a few minute, but i even figured out how to get there without the link!

Re: User List Search option

Yup! So did I. I may be slow but eventually even I can find my way out of a paper bag. That's what I was looking for. Thanks
