Glove Box can't open?

Button/lock did work...but now can't open glovebox. I can pull it back about 1/4" and see the lock is not releasing.

Does that catch lever push back or need to be pulled forward or turn to release?

key no longer will turn to lock. Feels like the mechanism broke internally. Push button no longer springs back

Is there a "slim jim" type of procedure to open....or is this a locksmith thing?

Of course this happened when I was getting my proof of insurance out to go register the car.....

Re: Glove Box can't open?

The catch lever swings down to clear the catch. You can try to reach around from the
back of the glove box.

Re: Glove Box can't open?

1967 does same, is out of adjustment. I use my disabled parking tag(it hangs from rear view mirrow) to push the lever down.

Re: Glove Box can't open?

I've used an inch wide putty scraper or similar to slide down that 1/4" opening and just push the latch/catch down. Should open for you then.

Re: Glove Box can't open?

In the assembly manual pages 41 & 42 show the compartment and lock assembly. It appears the lock arm pivots down from the catch so you may be able to use something like a slim-jim. It would have to be flexible enough to get through the gap but around the body of the door but stiff enough to push the lever down. I have not opened mine in years so memory evades me. I don't have a program here to extract the pages or I would send them. There is a post here with a link where you can download the assembly manual. I will look at mine in the morning. Make sure you are using the correct key. Or you can drill out the lock cylinder and get a new one.

Re: Glove Box can't open?

Thanks guys. Ironically my Chassis Manual showed up today so I see how the latch catches. Didn't want to pry and scratch up the dash so was asking.

Small thin screwdriver to push the latch forward worked.

Key cylinder is dead

Easily available. You may think about all four cylinders. I haven't but they are 50 years old.
Actually five if you count the ignition.

Re: Glove Box can't open?

I got a new glove box/trunk lock/keys. I have the "late" 67 tail panel so my lock set for trunk is for 68, large key.

Installed both but the glove box lid does not easily (as it did with old lock) open.

Is there supposed to be some form of spring that pushes it out some?

I do have a switch upper left in the box that my guess is for a glove box light which it does not have that is like a door jam type switch with a light spring button if that doubles as the open assist..

I basically have to push button then use my fingers from other hand to pry/pull the door open

Should the door "pop" open on its own once key lock is pushed in?

I don't see how to adjust, if you can, the top plate the lock catches on.

FWIW in my copy of "assembly manual" page 37 ( not 41-42) shows glove box detail but I am not seeing anything that would act as a "spring" to assist in its opening...other than gravity.

My Assembly Manual is a repop re-print and has no Glossary so basically need to thumb through pages until you see WTF you are looking for

Chassis Service Manual has no interior 411

Re: Glove Box can't open?

The assist comes from the door bumpers. With age they loose their elasticity.
With new bumpers you'll have to slam the door shut. I just changed mine with
Soffseal #1069 from Speedway Motors.

Re: Glove Box can't open?

It was the rubber stops that were preventing the door to close unless you really slam it....then to much pressure from the stops was keeping the door pushed back so the lock latch didn't have enough room to release

I pulled out the stops and now the door sits flush but you do have to use your fingers or the key in lock to pull the door open

My intent was to pull the stops out and shave 1/2 the material from them but they both broke on removal. They were fairly hard

Odd the door just does not fall open given its angle. I have played with the angle of the latch plate but no real change

I keep CD's in clove box since they don't fit in console. PIA as I can't open it with one hand.

It's always the small crap. I will try some new stops but will likely have to cut them down some as with them the door stick out to far, does not sit flush
