Rear Windlace won't fit? 68 Camaro

I have a 68 Camaro Coupe. Ordered the precut rear windlace with the finished top edge. Windlace fits except for at the top because it's too wide to fit inside the windlace. Am I missing something? See attached picture. Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

Brian

Re: Rear Windlace won't fit? 68 Camaro

Brian, the windlace is not supposed to wrap around the cardboard or the metal top of the interior qtr panel. The interior qtr panel usually has a couple inches of vinyl (seems to be cut off in your pic). That extra vinyl is what is wrapped around the pinch weld (contact cemented) and the windlace gets attached. There should only be the metal pinch weld and two layers of the vinyl for it to cover.
130fe and Garfields Maro like this.

That makes sense, good thing I just cut the one side. My other side has the extra vinyl. So I need to wrap the extra vinyl around and cement it, then windlace goes over that? Do I need to cut the cardboard back 1/2" so that it's not too think for the windlace?

Correct, the windlace fits over the excess vinyl (and pinchweld) only. It actually butts up to the underlying cardboard. I have this pic handy of the bottom area that might help...

Brian, it is a test and fit kinda deal. If the cardboard goes to far forward and interferes with the windlace fully seating, then yes, you can trim a little cardboard to make it fit correctly. Just take your time and measure twice, cut once

Re: Rear Windlace won't fit? 68 Camaro

Is there a special way to install the Windlace or pinchweld? I have tried 3 times to install it on my 69 Camaro and having to purchase new ones each time. This time I am doing it like the people say here on this post not to pinch the cardboard and to use contact cement but the windlace still is not sitting right.

Jose, can you post a pic or 2 ? I still have the original windlaces which aren't perfect but fit well. Earlier repros had bad reviews. Not sure if they're any better yet or not ?

Re: Rear Windlace won't fit? 68 Camaro

Looks like it has the internal metal clip, but the windlace doesn't fit over the end properly. The end of the clip shouldn't be visible as it's suppose be inside the end of the windlace.

That's what I think I see.

edit after additional pics; I think the windlace needs to be twisted down to fit over the clip or possibly the end of the clip needs to be bent down...

Re: Rear Windlace won't fit? 68 Camaro

Not to hi-jack this thread and this may be a dumb question but will windlace for a 68/69 fit a 67? I don't like the way the top piece of a 67 windlace fits or looks.

Re: Rear Windlace won't fit? 68 Camaro

So should I start the install at the top and work down? Do i have to squeeze the windlace as I install it?

Re: Rear Windlace won't fit? 68 Camaro

Definitely start at the top. I don't know what it will take to make it fit properly looking at pics. It obviously needs to be pushed in on the bottom edge so it's flush with the panel. The clip may be what's holding it up. May need to remove the screw to see if it will fit better, then make the necessary modifications, adjustments, etc....

Re: Rear Windlace won't fit? 68 Camaro

I always thought the 69 windlace was different than 67-68. The 69 windlace has a metal tab at the top that extends into the window fuzzie area and is attached there with a screw.
The rear side panel has extra material that wraps around the pinch weld that the windlace goes over. I can possibly get a pic but that covers the 69 only as far as I know.
