How much cotton batting to reupholster rear seats?

I am redoing the rear seat from my 68. I got 5 yards of 2" loose cotton batting, expecting I could do both the seat back and bottom with it. I have the seat back cover tacked down, and I've already used all 5 yards...and it still seems like it could use a little more padding.

How much padding is needed? I'm thinking of ordering another 15 yards so I have a couple to finish the seat back, and the rest for the seat bottom.

Thanks!!!

Add 1/2" of foam on top of the batting. Fills it up and leaves a smooth finish, per my upholsterer.

I thought about using foam...and if everything wasn't shut down, I'd go looking for some. I figured the original didn't have foam, so there had to be a way to get the batting to work.

Think I'm going to call it good enough and move on to stripping down the seat bottom next.

A professional would use a steamer to tighten up the wrinkles. If you're like me and don't have some of these specialized fancy tools, a damp towel with a steam (clothing) iron does the trick. The heating and cooling causes the vinyl to relax and shrink as it cools. Just make sure the iron doesn't make direct contact with the vinyl as it will melt !

BTW, I used my original padding and added a 1" layer of quilt batting. It comes in a roll.

I would add the foam as a final layer. I think it will smooth out the lumpy look cause by the batten. Then as suggested, use the steam (damp towel and iron) to make it tighter.
Almost everyone who has done this will say they should have added more padding.

Pretty sure I can pull off the steaming, I’ll give that a try. I think I ended up with 5 layers (about 7 yards) of the cotton batting in the seatback. That leaves me about 13 yards to do the seat base. I do have access to cotton quilt batting, I could use that as a top layer.

Thanks all!

Started on the seat bottom tonight:

This one looks more challenging, there are listing wire sleeves on either side of the driveshaft hump that get attached to the springs. It's not just attached around the outer edge.

Re: How much cotton batting to reupholster rear seats?

Now, I feel like I need to replace the cotton of my car seats after looking through this thread. I hope that I won't mess it up, as it doesn't seem that hard.

Backstory on this car is that PO had it parked outside in the woods for a year. It picked up a bad mouse problem. I wouldn’t be replacing the padding if I didn’t really have to.

Piece-a-cake...Well, the frame doesn't look too bad (rusty). Have certainly seen worse as they were left bare from the factory. Yours should clean up well. Padding definitely looks trashed.

A lot of folks disregard those fine wires woven in the burlap when recovering. Personally, I think it's worth while using them as it helps displace the load more evenly on the springs. I actually added a few extra as the rear seat on these cars isn't much (comfortable). If you need replacements, Amazon has some rigid fine wire referred to as "music wire". https://www.amazon.com/Music-Wire-36...s%2C234&sr=8-3

I don't recall the proper diameter wire used, but different dia are available.

The foam is available at the Walmart cloth department. Foam on the back makes a substantial difference, they used foam on the front.

Waiting on some listing wire to arrive, got the seat back installed...

I’m gonna stick with the cotton for the bottom, if I really hate it I’ll take it apart and try again!
