I installed an electric choke kit on my 850 DP a couple of months ago and have been fighting to get it adjsuted correctly since. If I adjust it to where the choke comes on enough at the first start to keep it running, then it idles at 1500 rpm for about 15 minutes. I turned the housing CW to reduce the amount of choke, but now it dies the first time, but will run ok after a minute or so. Also, it seems like the choke is getting stuck because if I blip the gas after it is warmed up the idle comes down to 1000 where it should be. Is there supposed to be some magical setup for these things. Any help would be appreciated.

I installed an electric choke on my Holley 600 and it is made so you have to blip the throttle to idle it down after a couple of minutes. There is a lever that catches on a stepped cam. The instructions should tell you how to adjust this. You may be able to adjust it so you don't have to, but I have not looked at it that close since I installed it.

How do you have it wired? The choke coil needs a full 12 volt source in order to operate properly; if it's wired to the (+) terminal on the coil, it's only getting 7-8 volts, and won't have the normal full range of adjustment from closed/cold to fully-open, as the bi-metallic coil won't get full voltage. It also needs a good engine ground, like under a carb nut.

John,

I have it wired to +12V directly to the fuse panel. It is the only device driven from a 10amp fuse. It is grounded to the carb. It just seems to take too long for it to release and let the idle come down. It seems to take over 10 min for the choke to disengage.

Kent -

I'd take a close look at the choke blade and shaft (and unloader linkage adjustment) to make sure nothing is binding up; I've used Holleys with electric chokes for years and never had a problem with them.

Question

On a related note, I'm fighting a Holley 750DP with an electric choke, I think a power valve may have crapped out, but I haven't hooked up the electric choke yet. I was under the assumption you could tune the carb before messing with the choke, right or wrong? Seems to run OK at idle, but stumbles under load, just isn't running right. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! KZ

KZ, does it stumble on acceleration, or at WOT under load?

Carb tuning and choke adjustment are independent; tune the carb for how you want it to run warmed-up, adjust the choke to get the cold driveability you want before it warms up.

Mccorry, it stumbles under load, doesn't run too bad at idle, my guess is still power valve. The carb is not dirty, it's been rebuilt, just needs to be tuned right. I checked the bowl levels and they seem to be ok, I'm going to either get a trick kit or a rebuild kit and go from there. By the way, in the Jeg's book, all the power valves have a # beside them, they are opening vacuum #'s, ranging from 2.5 up to 10.5......How do I know which one to go with? I wonder what would be stock, or if the power valves are marked in some way? I'm sure one of our expert colleagues will chime in and school me.......KZ

I would go with a 6.5. That is the accepted standard starting point and would probably work well for you.

Have you verified that the accelerator pump is working ok?

Thanks for all the replies. I found the problem last night and feel like an idiot. The fuse was blown. I must have blown when I was messing with the initial adjustments. As soon as I replaced the fuse and restarted the car it was idling 1000 like it should.

Mccorry, no I haven't really verified anything, I'm new to tuning carbs, I just thought I would give it a shot before I took it to a professional. I just know that Holley's are notorious for blowing power valves, it's simple to replace, so I'm going to try that first. How would I verify the pump was working? Thanks for your help....KZ

with the engine off, hold open the choke plate and look down into the barrels. Work the throttle arm slowly by hand and observe the streams of gasoline out of the shooters.

The streams should be strong and solid (no sputtering, etc.)
