I think ORENCH is close with "camarada".

"Camarade" is french for buddy or friend.

"Comrade" isn't a french word, its just an english word used in old James Bond movies.

I thought that it was a made-up word that they later found was French. Its not in my French-English dictionary however and I have never found it in an online translator either.
They dropped the name Panther because all Chevys at the time started with a "C".

Nova doesn't start with "C" either

Chevrolet does like to use names that start with "C" though.

I read somewhere GM actually had some Panther emblems already made for the F-body.

Impala was considered a model of a Chevrolet. Nova was a model of the ChevyII just like Malibu was a Chevelle. The ChevyII designation was later dropped, I think around 70. The C's that were in use in 66, when the Camaro name was chosen were:
Chevrolet
Chevelle
ChevyII
Corvair
Corvette

Camaro is an Indian word for "Fill this MF'r up again!". I heard this from comedian Jay Hickman and thought it was pretty funny. Who knows...

I don't know if true or not but I was told that Camaro was almost called a Corvaro as it was a derivative (changed and improvement) of the failing Corvair.

As the launch date neared, the car still had no name. It had been called various names by GM, including Nova, Panther, Chaparral, and Wildcat. Chevy also considered using the letters "GM" in the name, and came up with G-Mini, which evolved into GeMini, and finally Gemini. General Motors Headquarters killed that name, because they didn't want the letters "GM" used in case the car was a failure. Finally, the car was introduced to the press as the Camaro, considered to be a good name because nobody knew what it meant. Chevrolet produced an old French dictionary showing that the word meant "friend" or "companion", but Ford found an alternate meaning in an old Spanish dictionary-"a small, shrimp-like creature."The automotive press had a good laugh over that, and an even bigger one when one journalist found yet another meaning-"loose bowels." It didn't take long for the laughter to stop after the introduction of the stunning 1967 Camaro!!!!!

A marketing guy, an engine guy and an assembly line guy were assigned to name the new Chevy. The marketing guy felt that having "CA" in the name would help get the car sold in California. The engine guy proposed having "ma" in the name 'cause this baby is gonna run like a mutha &^%#$%. Lastly, the assembly line guy said, "let's get on with it, I just want this thing to "ro" down the line so I can keep my job." There you have it, name by commitee. Just remember, you heard it on this site first
