Did the high horse big blocks come with the intake manifold as cast or were they painted silver? I've also notice years ago at a Super Chevy show that some of the really nice factory restored cars had what appeared to be the engine painted with the intake on it at the time. So the intake had consistant orange over-spay all the way around the perimeter of it. Is that the way some of them came? Why was this?

The hi performance cars had alum. intakes the reason they had orange overspray on them was because the engine was painted after it was assembled with the intake being on it.

If you're asking if the factory aluminum intakes were left natural or painted silver, they were left natural. The factory orange overspray varies with different year models, for instance the 67 Corvette with it's painted valve covers tended to be downright sloppy on the intake, while the later chrome valve cover engines, which were reportedly painted with the valve covers installed, but with a bonnet of some type on them were much cleaner intake wise.
