If there is not motor in the car (69 Camaro) can you tell if it is an original Big Block car or if it is a Small Block car. Someone had told me once that the heater core hoses are spaced out more toward the fender to accomidate the wider engine (Big Blk). Is there any truth to this. What other signs are there.

If the heater core hasn't been change a small block car will have to heater hoses towards the center of the engine compartment. While the hoses on a big block car come out in the middle of the heater box.almost inline with the frame. It's kinda hard to explain without pic's maybe someone will post.

The hoses come through the firewall in line with the frame rail. The come out of the heater core at the end (farthest toward the passenger side).

There is a big blk in the car now but it is not original. There are only the holes I mentioned above in the firewall for the heater hoses. I am assuming that this is an original Big Blk car? Is there anything else I can look at?

The crossmembers are easy to change. I am looking for some hard to hide/change big block specific things.

Look for the X66 or X22 on the trim tag if the car was built after Nov 68.

Only time X11 had big blocks were a few COPO/Yenkos. Most Yenkos were X44, a few were X66, which was a B/B code.

Check the radiator to see if it's the curved neck at the top. If so, it could be a COPO car but you'll need to do more investigating. It should have had the cowl hood and wiring for the cowl hood relay if it was a COPO car. It can't be an SS396 so if there are 396 emblems anywhere, then it's a fake.

Weren't the fuel lines different sizes? I believe the A/C cars all had the same large opening in the firewall, so the heater hose outlets may not always tell. Check for signs that the tail panel was originally painted black to indicate an SS 396 non pace car. May see the old paint under the tail light bezels, under the edges of the trunk weatherstriping or bumper. LA built cars never used X codes only Norwood cars correct?

COPO/Yenko had single 3/8" fuel line. All others, except for Z28 and 375 horse had two lines. (5/16" or 3/8" fuel, and 1/4" vapor return)

does the car have a factory under hood lamp.if so it would be on the passenger side of hood for a big block car.how about the frame mounts lh 3980941 rh 3980942.the big blocks crossmember,s center section would be wider.

The car has a Big Blk in it now, so the cross member and the frame mounts have been changed. It is an X-11 car. But now I am fairly certain it is a base model, style trim small block car. The car was in primer when I got it. So I do not know if it had a black tail panel or sills.
