if it is a chevy V8, pre 93 , you can bring the #1 cylinder(drivers side front) to top dead center by lining up the mark on the balancer to the "0" mark on the pointer. pull off the distributor cap and see what position on the cap it is pointing. this is either the # 1 tower, or the #6. if it is toward the front of the distributor, then it is probably #1.mark the body of the dist even with where the rotor points with a marker. the rest goes clockwise as you look at it- 18436572. the cylinders are numbered odd on drivers side- 1357 front to rear, and the pass side is 2468 front to rear. if you get hem all on and it won't start and pops a lot, you have it 180 degrees off, and all the wires go on the opposite side.
if it isn't a chevy V8, the firing order might not be the same as what i said here, but the procedure for finding the #1 tower is the same.
