Re: Cowl hood CAI
Following. I am interested in doing this as well. I have zero fab skills, so I will need to have mine done at the shop. I have studied the photos well, and I believe you are correct in that they sourced a repo cowl intake setup and modified it to their needs.
There seem to be 2 differences between the available air cleaner assemblies. Flange width and extension height.
The cowl intakes vary in height depending on the 302,350, and 396. According to the description on Classic Industries, the 302 intake extension is shorter than the 350 due to the high rise manifold on the 302. The 350 extension (available separately) is 2.75" tall. The 302 is 2.25" tall.
The outer flange for the 302 seems wider than the 350/396. Ronnie's car looks like it uses the wider 302 flange air cleaner.
I think which one you use will be dependent on how high your motor and intake manifold sit in relation to the contact point of the hood. This will vary depending on your motor mounts and manifold type. I am running the Holley mounts, which sit the motor fairly low. I am running a FAST 102 which (I think) is taller than a factory LS1/2/6 intake.
I also thought about attempting to utilize the factory cowl flap opening, but I haven't gotten that far in my feasibility study on that one.
