Quick Question?? LS1 Swap Exhaust Question. Need Cat?

I am pulling the LS1 out of a 98 camaro for my 69 Camaro. Will the 69 need catalytic converters on it? I don't want to sell off the cats from the 98 if I will need them on the 69. They are fairly new flowmaster cats.

Thanks

You shouldn't unless your state or county requires emissions testing. And on an classic this may not be required anyway?

My LS swap has headers into mufflers at the rear.

Don't need cats, never had them in 69. Rear O2's will be turned off

If you run all the electronics, chances are you exhaust will be cleaner than those of a carb motor'ed engine. Just guessing here. Many counties require some type of sniffer testing, not all.

Re: Quick Question?? LS1 Swap Exhaust Question. Need Cat?

Thanks Guys--Really appreciate it. No emission testing in MN anymore.

For exhaust, I am really not a fan of headers-I would prefer to use the stock manifolds. I don't think they will clear the PS box though. Can anyone verify? If not, is there a non header option that I can use---manifolds from a corvette, GTO, other Camaro, Aftermarket manifold that doesn't leak? I've never had a set of headers that didn't leak, which is why I prefer not to use them.

Help apppreciated

World of difference in sealing up a LS Vs. a Gen1

Dynatech 1 7/8" x 3.5" no issues with leaks (collectors are 4-bolt)

Re: Quick Question?? LS1 Swap Exhaust Question. Need Cat?

One last quick question

I have the corvette accessory kit that I am putting on this motor. According to specs, the Corvette balancer is 1/16th difference than the Camaro balancer.

Do I need to change out the balancer? Have others just run the camaro balancer? I don't want to get the motor in, and have the belt thrown at higher RPM, or the belt chewed up.

Thanks again for your quick help on this. I want to keep moving forward!!

Yes, you will have to change it out. The water pump will need to be the correct offset for the Corvette accessories also, so plan for that purchase as well.

You can get some LS3 exhaust manifolds on ebay. If you go to LS1tech.com, someone should be able to tell you if they fit.

I was just going to order them. How do they fit around the steering box and spark plugs. I'd like to use the OEM plug boot shields if at all possible

You will need these adapter pipes :

Here are the fitment notes : https://www.holley.com/products/ls_p...arts/2473-1HKR

T56 and 4L60-70 trans fit good. Others may need bellhousing trimmed.

The steering box is not an issue

Use GM MLS factory exhaust gaskets and they will not leak. Do not use any of the paper gaskets. You should be happy with those headers
