Stock booster with LS1 swap?

Hey Guys,

Seems like I've read in a couple of posts about running a stock power brake booster with an LS swap. Trying to finish up my LS swap in my '68 but having trouble with booster hitting drivers's side rear coil. If it's been done, how did you clear the coil? Tap with a hammer, grind it, relocate coils? I used the holley swap system if it makes a difference. Also wondering if I need a new mc. I bought a new stock 1 1/8" mc and thinking I need a 1". Running LS calipers and rotors on front and stock drums on back. I will be installing the LS rear brakes in the near future when I put in a 4.11 posi rear. LS, 4L60E and 3.08s' with a limited slip rear are NOT ideal for this combo, unless you are planning on running at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Thanks for any input.

4.11 is a little extreme imho. What are your goals?

Re: Stock booster with LS1 swap?

Thanks Vega$69. I'll order one today.

My goal is a good streetable combo around town with limited highway cruising. Thinking maybe 3.73 or 3.55 may be better?

Re: Stock booster with LS1 swap?

With the OD being .70 I would go with 3.73s

If you already have the 3.08 posi you would not need to change it for a 4 series as you would if you went 4.11

Re: Stock booster with LS1 swap?

Good info John. Thanks for the tip. Looks like I'll be going with 3.73s'. Loving this swap, after 6 months and a lot of money, I'm finally back on the road. But it was all worth it. I'd do it all over again if I had to.

Re: Stock booster with LS1 swap?

What I did was to cut a V between #5 and #7 coils close the V up and weld (with coils removed) The way I cut it, I kept all the bolt holes

Clears by about 1/4" and only that 1 coil is cocked slightly.

Re: Stock booster with LS1 swap?

Thanks for the tip Doug! May have to try that while waiting on my dual 8" booster to come in. I wonder if it will cause a short if the booster is touching the spark plug wire up where it goes into the coil? I can get the wire on if I remove one bolt on the coil and **** it sideways just a hair, but the boot is touching the booster.

Heck, I been waiting 6 months. What's another day or two? It's so dang hard to be patient when it's prime time convertible weather in my part of the country right now.

Re: Stock booster with LS1 swap?

You can try using the Holley valve covers which have a direct coil mount. My coils clear a stock booster and I am running the ďtallĒ version which provides even less clearance than the standard version.

Another option is to make a relocation bracket out of mild steel or AU which shifts that rear coil just enough to clear.

Re: Stock booster with LS1 swap?

I actually took a grinder and removed a little off the booster in that spot. It was a small piece of a fold on the outside edge of the booster. Gave me the clearance I needed and it doesn't short out and the brakes work terrific. So good in fact, that I'm sending the 8" dual booster I had ordered back. Thanks for the pic Doug.

Re: Stock booster with LS1 swap?

I also have an 11" booster and didn't know the coil would hit !

I'm planning on mounting the coils on the inner fenders. I've never liked the coils on the valve covers anyway :

An LS-Coil Relocation Must Have

And I'm leaning toward these valve covers : https://www.holley.com/products/acce.../parts/241-404

Re: Stock booster with LS1 swap?

The design of the coils on the valve covers is to keep the wires as short as possible. Longer wires have more resistance.

Yes but the coils aren't pretty and that's what counts, right ?
