Iron 6.0 block...which one?

Whatís the dif between gen 3 and 4 really? Knock sensors moved, cam sensor moved, some webbing castings changed. What matters here really? I have not been able to see a gen 3 and gen 4 block side by side for a look. What I know is that there are many gen3ís around. Gen 4ís are nearly unheard of. Every one I have found has had a rod or piston failure in it. I am kinda mentally stuck on using a 4 but may have to reconsider. I donít intend to build anything outrageous out of it, no blue pill, just my own LS. No sanity check required, I know itís nuts.

LS Engine Tips: Gen III vs. Gen IV

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LS_bas...l-block_engine

24 Vs. 58 reluctor wheel
Knock sensor locations
Cam sensor locations
2005 and up = Gen 4
Some say better rod bots Gen 4

I'm using a 2003 6.0L with ARP rod bolts....been 7500 a number of times and just fine.

Re: Iron 6.0 block...which one?

My goal would be to change everything above the crank so mix and match between the blocks seems to be fairly straightforward. It appears that either reluctor can be used in either block, ditto for cams. Its just parts. The knock sensors were moved to clear the way for the cylinder drop out mechanics. I think I read somewhere that thereís a difference in the water jacket and some strengthening shapes in the gen 4 castings. From your perspective Doug it would appear none of this matters.

Re: Iron 6.0 block...which one?

Steve, I did the same. Junkyard gen III, built the way I wanted from used parts so it is a mix of gen III and gen IV parts. No big deal. Just keep in mind what management system you want to run when choosing injectors, sensors, and reluctor so that everything is happy together.

If you're interested I posted some of the work in my build thread.

Wow Matt, I went through a lot of your build post. My hats off to you.
After you finished with your mix n match did you mic how far in the hole your pistons were? What cam did you wind up with if I may ask?

Sometimes by the time you buy a used LS and do all the machine work etc you end up spending as much or more than buying a new aluminum block crate motor.

Re: Iron 6.0 block...which one?

No question about it John. Building it wonít be cheaper even if it isnít a monster stroker. I have approached a couple control suppliers regarding where to start and end. From what I have learned so far I was on the cusp of a mistake. Figuring out the controls first is sound advice.
