Can you still purchase first generation parts from a chevy dealer?

Certainly, and sometimes at very decent prices.

Expensive, but cheaper than most resto houses.
BTW, one indication of when a part is available from Chevy dealer, the resto house catalog refers to the part as "GM" If they can get GM, so can you. Not to be confused with GM authorized, which is a repop.

....but just watch out for some items. The part # may be the same, but they have changed the actual design of the part so it fits other applications, or for some other reason.

Yep, The outside door handle is a good example. The replacement parts are significantly thinner than the originals, or the repops.

Has anyone used the GM mirrors RH and LH for a 1968 yet? My dad is looking for a new set, and is very unhappy with the repops, I suggested new GM and found that the part number is still good. Anyone out there know the quality?

I have not been very happy with GM chrome items such as side marker bezels and emblems. There is a lot of casting flash and the chrome finish leaves a lot to be desired. I wound up buying repro, even though it wasn't exactly like original just because the finish was better.
