The answer is "no".
The 2nd gen is the same. If you remove your a/c box on the firewall you'll have a big hole in the firewall for the evaporator. Plus the heater core/hoses comes out in a different spot. The smaller heat only box won't cover the holes left in the firewall.
Your best bet is to leave the box on the firewall, discharge the system, remove and cap the hoses, remove the compressor and simply run water through the unit for heat/defrost. Save all the parts so you can put it back together again. Remove the hoses with a wrench, not a sawzall like it was common to back when these weren't worth much.
edit: the 2nd gen is the same - concept. The parts are different, the results are the same - can't do it (easily).
