Shop Manual lubrication section says to use chassis grease - same stuff used in ball joints and tie rod ends.

Thankx, guess that is why I've had grease leaking from the cover since I got the car. They had what looks like 90w gear lube!

Or,...GM still makes tubes of manual steering lube. I've got the part number at home if you need it...or go to your Ponitac or Chevy house and have them look it up. One tube will do the job. The reason your box looks to have 90wt in it is because after 30 years the original lube has broken down. The seals weren't intended to stop 90wt, and that's why you have a leak. Good luck!

I recently bought a rebuilt manual box. When I looked inside, I saw a thick grease. I had checked because I wasn't sure if I needed to buy some of the stuff. Interesting.
