I sold my '99 WS6 Trans-am and was planning on putting the radio I had in it into my '68 Camaro. It is a KDC-9017 Kenwood with the single din flip style front view. When I match it up to the dash it looks as though the original holes for the old style radio still extend beyond the sides of my radio. I was wondering if anyone one the board has installed a similiar radio into theirs and what they did to make it look good. I have seen it installed in many magazines and I realize I will have to do some cutting of the dash, but the question is to what extent of modifications to I have to do to get this task accomplished. Thanks in advance.

It might just be me, but the words '68 Camaro, dash and cutting make me cringe.

I mounted Stereo and CD deck in the glove box of my 68, left the original AM in the dash,
I tend to agree that cutting the dash of a fine 68 is criminal, not only that it looks terrible.

Wow, you guys make it sound like I am committing a sin even thinking of it. My car is definitely far from stock. The doors, headliner, a/c vents, back panels back seat all stock but the dash I was playing with. I have 3 Ultra-lite gauges where the A/C controls were and it looks sweet. I am into the stereo sound big time and going into the glove compartment every time to change a CD.......Nah!!! I have seen it before and I guess I need to dig through the magazine archives to get a closer look. Just thought someone here could help.

The single DIN size radios will fit into the opening with the cover plate extending over the exposed tuner holes in most cases (depends on the coverplate/mount gasket size).
There is (or was) a kit marketed by someone for the installation of DIN size radios in older american cars which included a large outside cover plate of plastic that you trimmed to size. I haven't seen one around in a while - but I haven't looked either.
I mounted my stereo (a remote control Kenwood)out of sight under the dash/glovebox area and use the remote so I don't have to reach for it. The original (functioning) AM proudly occupies it's original hole.

I was thinking about doing the same thing to my 68, I found in the Rick's First Gen catalog a radio face plate for aftermarket radios, It is for the am/fm cassette radio with knobs but the holes are closer together so you mite be able to cut this plate out to fit the DIN and not see the holes or detents
or try calling them and see if they make one for the DIN size.

OK, what does "single DIN size" mean?

I'm putting my Radio/CD in the glove box, and a mint original AM in the radio hole.

I, too, cringe when I hear "cut the dash," but I think you should do what you want. After all, it is YOUR car.

"DIN" refers to a industry standard for the size of control components. Many of the auto manufactures have adopted these standards for the radio sizes. 'Single' DIN refers to the radio being a single multiple of the size, 1.5 or Double refers to the radio being half again or twice as tall as a single DIN unit. They did this to make things less "confusing"(?)for component suppliers and installers.
While some radio/stereo components share wiring colours, there are still no set standards for wiring and connectors - yet.
BTW - the 'modern' radio adapter plates sold for Camaros don't make the installation of DIN type units any easier, they do allow the use of metric spaced shaft type units popular prior to the introduction of CD units.

Thanks gentlemen. I am not pleased with the idea of modifying the dash to do this but I have had my mind on the looks of this Camaro for a long time and this is one of the steps. From the replys I guess I will research the oversize backing plate and triming idea and I also have thought sof taking it to one of our local Sound specialist to see if they have any ideas. I will post when I come up with the final thoughts. thanks

VINTAGE68,

Is you're "remote control Kenwood" hidden in the glove box or does it stick out under it? I'm asking cause most IR remote need a clear view of the radio.

Well it's .... Hey! if I tell you you won't steal it will you?
It's under the seat, I have to point the remote slightly down and to the rear from the drivers seat to control it. It works just fine and you can't see the unit from above. I like to lock things in the glove box in the ragtop so I didn't think I wanted to give up this space.
I have considered putting a small "mirror" (or anything reflective) under the dash mounted on the heater box or somewhere so I could aim at that and adjust it. I plan to give that a try soon.

hmm,my '67 is a radio delete car,and i had a
tough time finding a radio delete plate...
classic industries is making a repo one
and i bought it...it looks great

Caveman, what do you mean by radio delete plate. A plate to blank off the existing radio holes in the dash? if so this is an idea for a little creativity.
