I have a '68 RS/SS convertible with a Tic Toc Tach that has a 6000 Rpm redline. I have found some info that indicates that this tach only came with the 396/375Hp engine. Does any one know if this info is correct? Is there other indicaters on the car that may help me varify if it truely is an L78.

Toad,

The information that I have indicates that only the Z/28 and the 396/375 HP cars came with the 6000 RPM redline Tic-Toc-Tach. I have used that as an indicator (but not fact positive) in my 68 RS Z/28 but remember that could have been swapped out at anytime during yours or my cars life. It is a realization that I live with even though I feel it is not that likely.

Unfortunately there is nothing on the trim tag mentioned above on the 68 Camaros that will help you confirm the L78 status. For some reason in 68, GM was very stingy on the amount of information on the Trim Tag. Outside color, interior, V8 or 6, and some date codes are about all that is available.

There are other indicators for SS and Z cars but confirming true L78 status without build sheet or POP may be very difficult.

BTW: They are making re-pop high RPM tic-toc-tach now so it will be even easier to clone a car unless the re-pop is not very good and easily recognizable. My car was finished 92/93 time frame so if the guy who did the car got a high RPM tach at a swap meet, at least I know it is OEM.

Good Luck

Robert

Was the car sold new in Canada? If so, you can contact GM of Canada and find out all the info you need.

I'm kinda curious about how many 68 Converts came with a 396/375 motor. Does anyone have any information on that?

The restoration on my car was completed in 1989. The resto was well documented by pictures including the guage panel prior to removal from the car(1985). This car went through the phase of the big wide fender flares prior to the resto so it doesn't appear the guages had been tampered with.
As far as #'s in the 375 HP convertible goes It's anyones guess.
Unfortunately this car was sold new in the US.
