hi guys.. i am Trying to replace my rear leaf springs on my '67 Camaro
i am trying to drop the fuel tank so as to get to the upper shackle bolts,Wow what a pain!!
i have the fuel line unhooked,the sending wires,and unbolted the fuel cap neck;
how do i get the filler neck out of the tank?? Please.. Lee

update 11:30 am edst 5/12/2002...
Thanks to all,i got the fuel tank out,would have never thought to remove the rear plate\
license tag/ to look there for the clamps & filler neck tube!!{ } Duh.
now it looks like i might have to use a cutoff air tool to get the upper nut loose for the rear shackle..or my Sawzall,but room is tight, my 1/2 drive ratchet won't fit with a socket,maybe a flare nut crow's foot/?

well i put the car back on the ground;and i drained the rest of the fuel i could get out of the tank,it had alomst no dirt/rust and very little water,so it looks like i am lucky
as far as the condition of the tank. I see the fuel line is nice and prebent coming out of the sending unit area..looks old tho hahahaha

Remove the license plate and you can gain access to the band clamp for the filler neck/tank hose. just loosen the clamp, rotate the hose (to loosen it up) and then remove the tank straps and it is out. I use a floor jack with a piece of plywood (about 3'x3') to help balance the tank and then lower away.

You dont need to take the tank out to do that just use two long wrenches and keep working with it.

ok i have a floor jack under it with a piece of 2x10 about a foot long...
i hope its not raining too hard tommorow,
i will try this thanks!!!

well i tried the wrenches and rounded the damn nuts so i want to take the tank out so i can use a 6 point socket,and a sawzall

first time i took them damn nuts off the bolts near the tank, well i did it without taking the tank out, but i did something to one of them and i could not get the sucker off for nothing. I ended up drilling through the center off the bolt with a big mother of a drill to "cut" it off, since i couldnt do it with a sawzall (without beating the crap out of my tailpan).

Take the tank off, you'll be glad you did, you can seal it on the inside and clean it out, and paint it a nice color or something.

fortunately I didn't blow the whole thing up when I used the old fire breathing wrench to take those suckers apart... while the gas tank was still in...

I agree with all that is said above... take off the liscense plate, loosen the rubber hose, and drop away. Oh, also, loosen the rear tank strap bolts first. Doing the fronts won't do you any good until you get the rear bolts apart... because the fronts have to swivel... well, it is hard to explain. You will see what I mean.

Also, be sure you've disconnected your sending unit wiring. Don't want to tear any of that up.

now to get the springs out later in the week,if it stops raining,as i don't have an inside spot to work on the car,waaah

while we're at it, say for example gas spills ONLY while filling up and then quits leaking when done, would we say it's just the filler hose? And if so, could it be replaced without dropping the tank?

Yes and Yes. the filler neck unscrews from the tail pan and pulls up and out. Then you can replace the filler hose. There is also a rubber boot that keeps vapors out of the trunk, it might be a good idea to replace it when you do the filler tube.
