As far as I know a 6500 redline tach wasn't available in '69 Camaros. There was a 5000 redline 7000 tach in the SS 350's, a 5500 redline 7000 tach in the 325/350HP 396's, a 6000 redline 7000 tach in the 375HP 396's, And a 6000 redline 8000 tach in the Z28's. I have been wrong before.

There were 3 different Tachometers used on 69 Z/28's. The early production cars got 6000 redline x 7000, the mid year production got 6000 x 8000, and the very late production got 6500 x 8000.

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken

So what is GM's thinking on red line numbers? They change the red line from 6000 to 6500 and use the exact same driveline? I would think they would have the numbers calculated out a little better than that.

Redlines weren't set based on powertrain capability or power curves - they were set based on warranty expectations (which doesn't explain the very late-'69 Z/28 500-rpm redline increase); when marketing is involved, some things just "happen"

Nope, in 69, at least, all L-72 tachs were 6000/7000. not sure about ZL-1.

The 6500 rpm red line tach is found in a few very late production Z/28s.

The '69 body style was supposed to carry over into '70 with the LT1; plans changed. The '70 Z/28 tach is 6500 rpm I believe.

Just a routine engineering change.

Correct William, GM simplified things in 70 by offering just a 6500 tach for the Z28. Also, the 375hp 396 cars received a 6000 redline tach...
