I was told that GM used the 21" small block fan shroud for A/C with 23" radiator and non A/C cars. Is this true?

Gary,
67' - 69' small blocks with A/C used the 23" radiator. All big blocks used the 23" radiator also.

There are differences in the fan shrouds. I'm not sure if it's the offset or fan blade diameter or both.

Check this link and look under cooling system for the fan shrouds. http://www.firstgen.com/

If you have the new hard copy edition catalog from Rick's they are listed on page # 189.

I bought a used shroud over the internet to put on my 21" 2 core that was in my 6 cyl 68. The shroud turned out to be for a 23" radiator and wouldn't fit. When I bought a 23" 3 core radiator it fit fine.

I have a 23" 4 core radiator in my Z with the 21" shroud. As you can quess it doesn't fit from tank to tank. The driver side end of the shroud lays on the core. Haven't had any luck locating an original. I did notice in Rick's that there is a 23" for the 67-68 smallblock and a 23" for the big block for 69 but isn't the 67-68 different from the 69 and the 69 big block is different from the small block?

Winch, can you see the part number on yours. I could use it.

I am in Gary's boat.

The previous owner hacked up the shroud that is in there because the fan was hitting it and I need a new one.

Hoping someone else has been the guinea pig.

Guys, Have to correct myself on the earlier post. It looks like the 23" radiator was used on small blocks with A/C in 67' & 68', NOT IN 69' from what I'm seeing with the radiators available in Ricks. 69' shows 21" radiator for small block regardless of A/C or not. In 69' GM went to a seven blade clutch fan vs. 5 blade clutch fan for cars with A/C, this might be the reason they were able to use the 21" radiator.
I have a 21" in my 69' and used the repo from Rick's on page 189 part # EP-3R and it fit fine covering the tanks and is away from the core. I ended up making my own lower brackets though because I didn't like the one I bought from Ricks.
Hope this clears some questions up, sorry for the bad info.

69Z28: I could try to find that part number but my shroud is not for sale. I bought the matching 23" radiator. I was just updating this thread with my experience that the large shroud didn't fit the small radiator, at least not well enough that I wanted to do it. It's probably just as well. I think my 350 needed the larger setup especially when I put on Vintage Air.

Winch, I could use the number to verify just in case I find one.

Gary, Rick's has the 23" fan shroud for a 69', the part # is EP-5, cost is $60.00 bucks. It's on page 189.

Drew...That shroud is for a big block car and they are different from the small block shroud. I already checked into that. Could it be possible if GM used the big block shroud for A/C small block cars? A gentleman sent me e-mail and claims that the 21" was used on a 23" radiator, but haven't found any info to substantiate that.

The small block engine sits in the center of the bay. The big block engine sits to the passenger side a little more than an inch. No way the factory used a big block shroud on a small block.

I was under the impression that in 69, the small block shroud was the same for 327, 307, 302 and 350.

Using the same shroud for the 302, 307, 327, and 350 should be correct. But if the car had A/C how did the factory build it? Heavy duty fan with clutch, 23" radiator (possibly 4 core?)wider fan shroud, not necessarily a larger opening?

Gary, read my earlier post again about the radiator sizes for different years.

Perhaps you can use a 68' small block shroud for an A/C car with a 23" radiator because as Winch stated it fits his 23" radiator fine and all the mounting brackets are listed as the same from 67' to 69' for a small block.

I would prefer using a 69 unit if I can find one. They are out there, I just have to find one. Until then I'll keep using the 21" shroud. My Z had a 23" shroud in it when I bought it, but it was a Pontiac shroud and that is way different as well.

Gary, I just noticed your reply. Where would I look for that part number? I don't even know if mine is repro or original. I got it from the parts for sale section here.
I have class tonight and wil be late when I get home but I'll look if I remember to.
