I am curious if anyone has ever swapped an engine on a van. I have this 81 GMC that likely needs a new engine, or at least cam/lifters/timing set and possibly some valve work. Is it a real pain to do? It sure looks like it will be, and would like some suggestions before I dig in.

I think I saw a dodge van with the front way up in the air at the dealer shop and they were pulling it out the bottom, though it's been a while so my memory is fuzzy. maybe the crossmembers unbolt. OR you may have to take the radiator support off and bring it straight back with about a half inch if room. doesn't sound too bad, you can sure reach a lot of it when you pull the doghouse.

Done this many times.Not hard just time consumimg.The front grill comes out,radiator and fan cover.If its just the top of the motor just take it out the side.If its the hole jack van up as high as possible exhaust is the problem might have to heat studs to get off and alot of stuff can be losen from the bottom.In side you can get to the trans bolts,starter.headers,cables.Engine pull must be able to lift motor over the front radiator support and bumber.Not bad good luck.

You have great access to the rear of the engine thru the doghouse, but you need to take the entire front of the van apart... (if i remember correct, even the bumper) you won't believe how many screws hold all that stuff in...

Thats what I was afraid of. Just by looking at it I can see that there is no way I can replace the timing set without taking out the whole rad, A/C and possibly the grille too. Dang, this is going to be bit of a bugger, with winter approaching soon, but thanks for the advice all.

Oh, btw, can anyone recommend a good place to buy a rebuilt Q-jet? The dang carb on this van lets the fuel trickle back into the tank after sitting for a few days and it wont start before the battery dies as a result. If I can get the engine running right, I think this unit would be fun for holidays, as it has the whole camper package etc.
