308-342 would be my choice. Somewhere in that range. If you don't like the 373, the 342 is not going to feel much different. 308 is a decent all around gear.

Re: camaro 89 best rear gear ratio

3.73 is 2350 rpm at 70 MPH. 2.73 is 1750.

What rpm are you looking for?

I agree. Go with 3.08. I own a 1991 Z/28 with the 305 TPI/5-Speed and I have 3.73's but it has the 5-Speed. I probably should have went with 3.42's but I wanted more off the line speed. I don't drive it much though so highway mileage doesn't really matter to me.

Re: camaro 89 best rear gear ratio

OP

use a RPM calculator using your tire size

https://spicerparts.com/calculators/...rpm-calculator

700R4 has a low 1st gear so 3:08 would still be quick off the line and OD RPM's would be conservative.

You can insert different gear ratios in calculator and see what RPM at what MPH and make a decision

On any gear change, if you do not already have a Posi...good time to install one.

Re: camaro 89 best rear gear ratio

My stock 85 IROC Z came with the 3.42 and is very drivable and will do 130 mph on the way to a poker game.

I had an 87 IROC that I put 3.23's in and it was great.

Re: camaro 89 best rear gear ratio

I had an 84 Z28 with a 5 speed. When I blew the 3.73 rear I put a 3.42 in it and couldn't tell much of difference. Even with the HO 305 (G) and a manual trans it was a serious slug. Yours is an RS without the HO if I'm not mistaken. Not that it makes much difference at, what was mine? 190 hp? If you put higher gears in it you'll feel like you're driving a Yugo.
There's a big misconception about tall gears and gas mileage in a lot of cases. Especially older cars. If you don't have enough power your engine is doing twice the work and using more gas.

Re: camaro 89 best rear gear ratio

rear gear....it really depends on what tire size and RPM's you can tolerate at FWY speeds.

If the car is just a short trip (read just a few exits of Fwy driving) stop light to stop light car than low gear ratios are the fun factor

IMHO use a rpm calculator using your tire size and tranny type to see what RPM's at what speeds you will have and pick the ratio that suits your tolerable RPM's at the speeds you mostly drive

or just be the car at 55 mph in the slow lane on Fwy if you want a street or 1/4 mi warrior with a 1:1 final gear tranny. OD tranny helps but IMHO anything over 342's for those and the RPM's are up there at 70 mph with a 700R4 OD trans.

I have a T56 car with 4:10's running a 27" tall tire and with a .50 6th I am just under 2k RPM at 80...so if you have a real high gear OD trans you can run a low gearset in the rear
