68 heater core replacement?

What's the simple way to do this?

I found a few threads about 69's and BBC versus SBC, but looking for some simple guidelines for a 68, SBC, no AC. Is this a weekend job with a fender removal and such?

It just let go the other night and started filling the car with fluid. My new carpet smells like crap now...ugh!

Shoe -

You should not have to remove the fender. Heater core is inside the interior part of the heater box. The bottom nut under the box on the firewall side, toward the inner fender, can be a bit hard to get at, but other than that and potential issues with the bends in the replacement core nipples being a pain to get back through the firewall, it's not too bad.

You're probably going to want to pull the carpet up and clean it thoroughly. Coolant may discolor the rug if it hasn't already. It turned the blue rug in my 68 purple when my core went.

Re: 68 heater core replacement?

It shouldn't take you that long to replace the heater core. You do not have to remove the fender to get the heater core out. That is only if you are replacing the blower motor....then you'll have to remove your inner fender.

There a five nuts that hold the heater box to the firewall. Just remove the nuts and the two hoses to the core and pull the heater box away from the firewall from inside the passenger compartment. Drop it to the floor and the core can easily be R&R'ed. Replace in reverse order. Make sure you cover your carpet with plastic to keep the mess to a minimal. Also, you might want to replace any of the seals to the heater box while you are there. Good luck!
