Radiator Capacity Question

I tried doing a search on the subject in this forum and didn't find any hits. Didn't find my answer on the CRG site either. Simple enough question though - is the radiator capacity for a small block motor with an automatic transmission less than it is for the same motor with a manual transmission? Looks to me like one of the side tanks has a fair amount of space reserved for tranny fluid to flow through. Just curious.

Re: Radiator Capacity Question

My books do not show a different coolant capacity for auto vs manual trans radiators. The only differences shown are for A/C car vs Non-A/C cars. Does that help at all??....Jb

Re: Radiator Capacity Question

I would think that the only difference in radiator capacity between manual or auto trans versions would be the space taken up by the trans cooler.

Re: Radiator Capacity Question

It should be the same. In my book it shows 14 qts. or 3.5 gallons for both.

Yes, every response helps. I replaced my lo-perf automatic tranny with a Muncie 4-speed many years ago. I had cause to pull my radiator a week ago and I was reminded of the remnants of the tranny cooling line fittings still sticking out of the passenger side of the radiator tank. I thought I had plugged the holes, but when I took a closer look I realized that I just cut off the lines close to the fittings. That's when it dawned on me that I have a big fat empty chamber on that side of the radiator. Got me to wondering what the radiators are like for manual transmissions and if that big empty chamber is actually not empty.
