AC to non-AC on 73

For 73 small block Camaro
The AC is non functional, so for the time being I am going to remove the giant evaporator core case. Can I just replace it with the standard small block heater box? Will it fit right? Are all the openings the same size for either AC or non-AC? What other considerations?

Thx,
Paul
