cooling fan question

This might be a stupid question, but would it make a difference while driving in town to have a cooling fan on the intercooler? My motor doesn't have a problem running hot at highway speeds or on the track, just the stop and go driving, 40 mph and under.

Re: cooling fan question

The best bet would be to address the cooling problem in the cooling system proper. At no or low boost you aren't heating the intercooler up very much.

Re: cooling fan question

Beautiful car!!!
But I think I found your problem,,,,,,, you need a REAL fan and SHROUD. Especially at your power level.

Re: cooling fan question

I installed a Flex-A-Lite Black Magic Extreme FLX-180 fan with a shroud about 3 weeks ago. It pulls 3300 cfm. I'm thinking that the size of the intercooler is interfering with the air flow through the radiator, but I could be wrong.

Re: cooling fan question

Marc, I found another clue in your original post. You say the car cools fine at highway speed but not slowly in traffic. That means air is moving through all your coolers just fine. The fan you have doesn't have enough balls. Oops, can I say that?

Re: cooling fan question

Fred, Do you know of any fans with a shroud that will fit that pulls more than 3300 CFM? My radiator is 22.5" by 18". The Flex-A-Lite Black Magic Extreme FLX-180 fan is a 16" fan.

Re: cooling fan question

16" electric fans are typically around 2200cfm.
A 17~18" 7 blade OE clutch fan will move considerably more air, and only when it's needed. Of course they're RPM dependant, which is usually when you need the air anyway.
OE shroud should work unless your radiator is something unusual..

Many say you don't need a fan at speed, yet in my daily driver, I can feel the clutch lock up at 60mph and watch the temp gauge's needle drop as a result.

I don't have a clue Marc. You know, these cooling systems were engineered buy people who smile in their sleep. Like Steve said, production stuff is hard to beat.
Did you see that fan-test in Hotrod about 10 years ago? Seven blade hi-po fans (OEM) with a thermal clutch cooled the best and used the least horsepower.
