Car will not stay cool? Need Help

I have a 68 camaro with a 454 and i have a new griffin radiator and a low temp t-stat and even added a electirc fan. The car has a flex fan. And a very small shroud every time i look for a shroud everyone always shows me the same shroud. When the car is just idling it will reach up to 230 degrees? Anyone know what the problem is ? Also has a new water pump. Any help or opinions will be usfull since i have tried everything i can think of. Thanky you

Re: Car will not stay cool? Need Help

the only thing i can think to check if the head gasket has not blown is the direction the fan is blowing iv seen fans wired backwards the fan will be blowing the air in the wrong direction you can get block tester from napa to check for a blown head gasket.

How does it do moving? Heating up when idling is usually not enough flow through the core and or not enough initial timing... A low temp stat won't help an over heating engine. If the cooling system can't bring the temp down below the stat rating it will never close.

Re: Car will not stay cool? Need Help

Ok this is what i have been leaning towards is the flow through the core. My intital timing is set at 12 degrees sound right ? And the flow through the core could be at fault of the tiny shroud right?

Is your fan blade 'inside' the shroud 1 - 2 " ?? If not, the air isnt being pulled thru the radiator properly.

I did check for air in the system. I really think the shroud is the problem. The car will stay cool during driving. This is mainly an idle problem

Re: Car will not stay cool? Need Help

I got the pics but at that angle, its hard to see how far into the shroud the fan is. Im betting its a shroud issue and run a 180 degree stat too. Also, have you checked the accuracy of the guage? Shoot a thermal gun at the top of the radiator hose as it enters the engine, see how close to your guage reading that is.

Re: Car will not stay cool? Need Help

BB shrouds are shallow compared to a SB one. Is your electric fan a pusher or puller? Sounds like a pusher mounted on the outside of the rad core since you are talking about a shroud. If it is a pusher it's half the problem since it's blocking the core. Are you using a belt driven fan too? If so get rid of the electric in front of the core and see what happens.

Re: Car will not stay cool? Need Help

Things I can think of for a hot running engine are--- Too lean , to rich, fan pushing air forward instead of pulling ( I SEEN IT), Timming, incorect head gaskets, blocked egr port (year specific), shroud, t-stat, radiator cloged.
How hot is it at cruz speed?
