Water Pump

Hey guys. I am a female, wanting to do my own repairs on my car. Primarilly because I don't trust any of the local mechanics. How hard is it to remove and reinstall a water pump for a 1997 camaro z28, LT1 350, six speed, using the Hayne's Camaro repair manual for my guide?

I would think you could do it. I'm sure you will get plenty of help here if you need it. I think more inportintly is that you have the proper tools to do the work with.

There are no problems only solutions

I agree, go for it.

The only issue I can forsee is the water pump on your LT1 is driven mechanically from the timing gear instead of from a belt like most engines. The water pump has a splined shaft the protrudes from the rear and there is a shaft that protrudes from the timing cover that are joined together by a splined sleeve. Sometimes the sleeve comes off with the water pump and sometimes it stays on the shaft from the timing cover. Just be sure the sleeve is in place when the new water pump goes on. Other than that, it's pretty much a straightforward water pump job.

Your Hayne's manual should cover it nicely, but don't be shy about asking questions here.

Edit: On your LT1, the distributor is behind the water pump. Now would be a good time to replace the distributor cap and rotor.
